Subject: Advice on UK Visitor Visa for my MIL — 3 months stay risks

Post by finord » Sat Jun 28, 2025 9:35 am

Hi all,

I’m helping my mother-in-law from Bangladesh apply for a UK Visitor visa. She’s planning to stay about 3 months (late July to mid-October) to visit family (including my newborn) and attend a family event in September. She’ll also check out some cultural and gardening events while here.

I’ll be sponsoring her and can cover everything — flights, living costs, travel, accommodation (she’ll mostly in my house, which I own with 1 spare bedroom). I’m planning to show around £5,000 to cover the trip.

Just want to check:

Is applying for a 3-month visit seen as risky by UKVI? I have ready they usually reject if it is too long (even within the 6 months rule)

Is £5,000 enough to show I can support her?

If she ends up staying about a month longer than planned (due to family stuff or travel), is that a big problem for UKVI or future visas? She has strong ties back home (property, family) and will return.

Would really appreciate any advice or experience you’ve got.

Thanks!

It’s a risk applying for a three month visa. Usually a visit/holiday is two to three weeks. I would definitely advise against staying longer than originally stated if she wants to visit again in the future. The next visa could be refused due to this. That happened to my Mother. My advice is always to be honest.
