Irish Passport Eligibility

Post by academic711 » Wed Apr 15, 2026 1:08 pm

Hi
I’m looking for some guidance regarding Irish citizenship eligibility for a newborn.

I’ve been living in Northern Ireland with my family for over three years and currently hold settled status (from August 2022 to June 2025 GTV- and thereafter ILR). My child was born about a month ago. Based on my understanding of the rules, since I have a settled status and have lived in Northern Ireland for more than three of the last four years, my child should be eligible for Irish citizenship.

My question is: would the child need to go through a naturalisation process, or is it possible to apply directly for an Irish passport?

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences others might be able to share.

Thanks in advance!

My understanding is as follows (but I'm no official)

Since you have settled status (which counts as a right to reside without time limit) and have lived in Northern Ireland for over three years before your child’s birth, your child qualifies automatically for Irish citizenship at birth. Because the child is an Irish citizen from birth, there is no need to apply for naturalisation.
You can apply directly for an Irish passport for your child.

Yes. Your child is eligible. You "just' need to apply for a passport. The website doesn't really seem to cover what documents are required for people living in Northern a Ireland, but hopefully the document produced at the end of the online application process tells you what evidence you'll have to supply. https://www.ireland.ie/en/dfa/passports ... -passport/
