Earliest date to apply for Naturalisation.

Post by aveo08 » Wed Apr 29, 2026 10:55 pm

Hi,

Apologies if this is a silly question, but I would be very grateful if someone could clarify this for me.

I would like to double-check the earliest date I can submit my online application for naturalisation. My pathway details are below:
Skilled Worker visa – 5-year route
SET(O) applied: 03/05/2025 (I was able to apply slightly earlier due to the COVID concession for delayed visa processing, although I was in the UK at that time)
Biometrics submitted: 12/05/2025
ILR approval email received: 15/05/2025
Would I be able to apply for naturalisation on 15/05/2026, or would it need to be 16/05/2026, not married to a British citizen?
I was physically present in the UK for the whole of May 2021.

Many thanks.

You can apply on 16/05/2026 to be on the safe side.

The path you followed until ILR is irrelevant.

Thanks for replying.

Small update, just noted that on my Gov.uk eVisa page it mentions Valid from 14 May 2025, but I received email on the 15th of may. Guessing since on the official eVisa page it's 14/05/25 I can apply on 15/05/2026.

Appreciate your help.

Sounds ok - just out of interest why do you want/need to apply on the exact date?
My recommendation is always to take it easy, get everything correct etc. Also best to avoid making travel bookings ahead of anticipated receipt of approval (you can still travel on your existing passport and ILR).Your choice of course.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.
I have a family event and plan to travel away on 23/05/2026. Ideally, I would like to submit my application and complete my biometrics travelling.
Given how unpredictable TLS appointment availability can be, I want to allow myself as much time as possible to secure a biometrics slot. However, I also want to avoid submitting my application too early if it could negatively affect the outcome.

As far as I understand, there are no restrictions on international travel after submitting the application—is that correct?
I would appreciate your guidance. Thank you for your help.

Applying after you're back from your trip will save you all this rush and concerns.

You're free to travel while a naturalisation application is being processed.

Thanks, you are right, I should probably do that then.

Last question, are there any rules about submitting application online before travelling and then getting biometrics/TLS done done on my return from short trip away?

Many thanks

There is nothing preventing you from travelling between application submission and biometrics.

But we go back to the previous question, why do you want to rush these things? if that's a short trip I'd wait and do everything without worrying once back in the UK.

Once you submit your application, you will have 45 days to book your biometrics appointment. Not sure about your area, but in our case, there were plenty of free appointments right on the next day and after that (it was in Glasgow).
If your trip is short, you can submit the application and then see when is the most suitable day for you to give your biometrics (before or after the trip) - Home office will start considering your case only after you complete biometrics.
Travelling is unrestricted, the most enjoyable fact here is that you don't need to count days out of the country anymore

Hi everyone,

Had another question. Under the driving offence section. It states the following.

Under the section "Convictions and other penalties", I selected Yes, then under "What was your driving offence" the following is stated.

"You must tell us about fixed penalty notices (e.g. a speeding or parking ticket) if you've received three or more. If you received a fixed penalty notice but didn't pay the fine and there was a criminal proceeding resulting in a conviction, tell us here"

I have only had ONE speeding ticket 18 months ago. Not sure if they would like me to include in the application or not given above.
Any clarifications will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Did you also get penalty points on your licence for the same offence?

Best to declare it just in case.

Then you must declare this.

Penalty points on the licence is a disclosable motoring offence, however it doesn't have any impact on the naturalisation decision - provided there are no other serious offences.
