OCI Questions - applying from the UK

Hello,
I am about to apply for my OCI from within the UK. A couple of questions:
1. Updated VFS document checklist says "Recent Employment Letter or latest Pay slip/Student ID/Self-
assessment from HMRC, if own business"
I am planning to submit payslip. Has anyone had experience doing this?

2. I read one post that their British passport original was retained. Is it generally the case? I may have to travel for work after applying.
