Hello everyone,
I am preparing to apply for my first British adult passport online. My current situation is a bit tricky, and I would love some guidance on how to proceed. I have a few moving pieces and want to make sure I don't run into issues at the border or face any delays in getting my first British passport.
Here are the key details of my case:
- Birth: Born overseas in Asia before 1 January 1983
- How I obtained citizenship: Through Naturalisation. Certificate issued in August 2026, and the ceremony is in 3 days
- Passports Held: I entered the UK in 2020 with a foreign passport that expired 3 years ago. I then replaced it with a new passport (same nationality), which is still active now.
- The Dilemma: I will apply for my first British passport on Thursday 20 Aug (my ceremony date). I also have a business trip from 3 Sept for 1 week, and I presume I will not be able to receive the British passport before my travel. I can travel with my current passport; however, if I need to submit my current passport to HMPO when applying for the British passport, I will not be able to travel as I would not be able to get my current passport back or the British passport before my travel.
Based on this background, could anyone advise:
- Can I submit my expired foreign passport to HMPO instead of my current (valid) passport? I can also send copies of all pages of the current passport, my driving license, and any other document.
You can try, but it may not be successful. What will you do if it gets refused while you are abroad?
- If I decide to travel using my current foreign passport, will I face any issues getting back to the UK since I would officially be a British citizen, but I wouldn't have a British passport yet?
You might, yes. The carrier company may refuse boarding you if they see you no longer have a valid visa (a British citizenship certificate isn't a travel document and you would have submitted it in original to HMPO for this scenario).
- If I cannot postpone my business travel (it is very important), and I need the British passport issued before 11 Sept (since on 12 Sept I have to go for another business trip that requires a UK passport), what are my options?
I am afraid you need to skip your first trip or postpone it to be on the safer side.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Given your timeline and situation, this is my view:
It is unlikely that HMPO will accept an application for a first British passport that doesn't include originals of both your current passport and citizenship certificate. That being said, it is not impossible to get your British passport before the 3 Sept if you apply on the 20 Aug and your referee immediately confimrs your identity (though there is a non-zero chance that it fails). If you still haven't received your passport you can call the helpline and explain you have an urgent business trip coming up, and see if you can escalate it (there is no fast track for first British adult passport).
So the question is: can you postpone at least the first trip? If so, and if potentially the second one could also be postponed if HMPO isn't quick enough with processing your passport, you'll get your passport sometime in early September (under usual circumstances for HMPO).
Alternatively, and perhaps a safer option, can you call your council and postpone the ceremony to mid-September, travel on your existing passport and immigration status, and apply for your first British passport then? Keep in mind you must attend a ceremony within 90 days of receiving your approval, so this may need to be a private ceremony.
