ILR with Expiring Passport Query

Post by r6njit » Wed Feb 04, 2009 9:27 pm

hello,

i'm an indian passport holder with ilr for the last 3 years.

my passport is to expire end of june and wasnt sure what to do - especially since i may be travelling to india for a couple of weeks:

* should i be renewing the passport before i leave for india?
* if so, do i have to carry both passports (since the old passport would have the ILR stamp on it) or do i have to get the stamp transferred over to the new one (more importantly, is this free?)
* if i dont renew it before going to india, would i be allowed to enter uk on the passport that is about to expire (although it has the ILR stamp)
* i could always apply for the naturalisation before i go but am not sure if i'll get appropriate appointments at the ncs so that i dont submit the originals (if this is advisable at all!)...

has anyone been in a similar situation? do the knowledge-gurus have a better idea / understanding of the best way for me?

I had the same situation like you. I did carry both old and new passports with me when I went abroad. Some countries you can use both passports but some don't so you have to check it before you go.

If you have ILR you can use the passport right up to the date of expiry.
