Naturalisation - referees

Post by tigrouetoile » Sun Feb 22, 2009 1:11 pm

Hi,

My husband (Moroccan) and I (British citizen) have started looking into getting him citizenship through naturalisation, as he will have been in the UK 3 years at the end of this month (ILR granted last Feburary).
The form seems straightforward enough, but we did have one query about referees.
We have decided on someone for the British citizen, over 25 referee and for the other would like to ask a close friend (also British) who is an assistant professor (therefore qualifies as someone with "professional standing"), but currently at a university in the US. Does it matter that she is not currently resident in the UK? There is nothing on the form or in the guidelines to suggest that the referee has to be resident in the UK, but considering how much this is going to set us back, we'd rather be safe than sorry!

Many thanks,

Rachel

On the basis of keeping things as simple as possible, I'd always suggest a U.K. resident.

The first referree ( who has to be by professional nature) can be any citizen. But I would better write a referree who is a resident of UK. Play Safe.

Hi,

One of my referees wants to know what the home office will do. Will they ring the referee, ask to come for an interview or send a form ?

Thanks.

I think it says it on the website but if they do check, they either call or write.

If there is a problem with the referees they will ask you to submit a new one, that is all.

By following the instructions, you could have both not resident in the UK as long as one is over 25 with a British Passport and the other is a professional person.

Simply follow the instructions.

This is from the BIA annexure

6.3.6.10 Referees are asked:

-how long they have known the applicant

-how, when and for what reason they met or meet the applicant

-to confirm whether, in their opinion, the applicant meets the statutory requirements other than the residence requirements

- to give any other information which they think should be taken into account in considering the application

Hope this helps.
