EEA4 Application - Anyone asked for passport back to travel?

Hi to all
I would appreciate any help I can get. Has anyone out there submitted their application but then asked for their passports back to travel? If so, how long did it take to get your passports back and what did you do about re-entering the UK? If the old right to remain has expired but the EEA4 application is under consideration then the right to remain is apparently extended until the decision is made either way, BUT how do you prove this at immigration when trying to come back in? And did you ask for your marriage certificate back as well to help prove things? Help and advice greatly appreciated.
