Child status to overseas UK citizen?

Post by Peter2009_Jul » Mon Jul 20, 2009 8:10 pm

I am a British citizen, born in the UK to British parents. Currently, I am living in Canada and have two sons (4 and 2). My wife is Canadian and does not have British citizenship.

I want to get UK passports for the two boys. Do I need to register the two boys as British citizens using the MN1 form first or can I just apply for the passport?

Just apply for the passports.

(also probably a good idea to get Canadian citizenship for yourself, if you don't have it already).

You can also apply for their UK passports in the UK if you plan an extended trip here. It is 1/2 the price of a Canadian application. This is a good option for renewals, though for first time passports it may be better to do it in Canada as you have to prove more...

Note also that passport prices are going up again this fall.
