Dual nationality query

Post by CliffP » Mon Aug 24, 2009 1:58 pm

My partner is a Tanzanian national and renewed her passport in 2006.

In 2007 she was naturalised as a British Citizen.

Currently Tanzania does not recognize dual nationality, and my partner does not want to renounce her Tanzanian citizenship.

Will the Tanzanian authorities be aware of her new British nationality?

We are hoping to go to Tanzania next year to visit family.

Can she go out using her Tanzanian passport and come back on her British one? This would avoid any visa fees or queues at immigration.

I don't want her to get in any trouble.

If Tanzania doesn't recognise dual citizenship I see a practical problem on leaving Tanzania:

As a Tanzanian (only) she would need a visa for the UK.

On leaving Tanzania, how would she explain that she is allowed to enter the UK? No doubt they'll check that on departure, and using the UK-passport is out-of-the question for this purpose.

Maybe she can apply for a British visa to be stickered into her Tanzanian passport? Not sure if Britons can apply for UK visas though.

Otherwise: If there are any neighboring countries to Tanzania to which she doesn't need a visa as a Tanzanian, maybe use the landroute and fly from somewhere else...

I hope someone has a better Idea.

She would have had a permanent Resident Status (ILR) before acquiring British Citizenship. She can continue using her Tanzanian Passport with her ILR and show the British one when she arrives at UK port, or the Tanzanian one if she doesn't mind queuing up for an hour or two. That is perfectly legal.

The Tanzanian Authority wouldn't know she has acquired a British citizenship, except she tells them.

She should also be aware that upon renewing her Tanzanian passport (when it expires), she will not be able to have the ILR transferred to her new passport! :(
Not the end of the world though! She can always travel with THREE passports whenever she's moving back and forth between UK and Tanzania!

Really? I figured it could work this way. On leaving Tanzania, the Airline checkin staff will be interested to see her Visa/British Passport to see that she is legal to travel. She can show them her British Passport, or her Tanzanian one if she has a UK visa sticker in it.

When passing through Immigration controls (if there are any) she should display her Tanzanian passport. They would not be interested in where she is travelling as all they care about is whether she is legit to leave the country, right? Her Tanzanian PP may be stamped with an Exit Stamp (depends on the country rules).

That's where the problem is: Maybe they are not interested, but if dual-citizenship is considered an issue, they can use this to find out what's the story.

It's be sort-of bad if they'd do that.

Using the ILR and possibly three passports could be an option. But would that be accepted?

What would you do if the passport containing the ILR gets lost? (Whenever traveling I have a contingency-plan on how to get everything back ASAP. This includes lists of embassies with phone-numbers, a Western-Union-agent (whom I know personally) will trigger sending money through a simple phone-call or email from me etc... I'd feel nervous if I'd know that a certain document would be unrecoverably lost should it be lost.)

Not possible if she has a valid British passport.

Right you are:
Right of abode (INF 12) wrote:You will not be issued with a certificate of entitlement if you already have:

* a UK passport describing you as a British citizen
* a UK passport describing you as a British subject with the right of abode in the UK
* an ID card issued under the Identity Cards Act 2006 describing you as a British citizen, or
* an ID card issued under the Identity Cards Act 2006 describing you as a British subject with the right of abode in the UK.
But what if the UK passport is lost?
