What happens after PSW permit? Please advise

Post by lilly09 » Thu Sep 10, 2009 12:35 am

Hi, upon receiving a 2 year permission to work in the UK what should you do next to extend the stay? As they say the tier 1 PSW is not renewable after 24 months....Given that you will be working this whole 2 yrs and you continue to hold a job position at the end of the 2 yr stay, how can you apply to stay longer?

Also as your stay under this type of visa or a student visa does not seem to count towards the total amount of yrs to get citizenship....how do you guys actually manage to get around to do that?

Normally, PSW is a just a step to find an employer, after that you should ask your employer to get you a work permit from home office and start working and residing as a skilled worker. You can change to student visa if you want to. The bottom line, find an employer and make sure they can get you a work permit as far as I know.

So you could actually switch to the highly skilled worker category in the end of the 2 yrs provided you fullfil the criteria i.e. get the necessary points??

I do not think you need your employers to do that. I dnt think many would want to employ you and have to deal with paperwork n the Home Office, it would be just too much trouble..... can you please enlighten me?! thanks!

The highly skilled worker visa is a bit harder than PSW. Your age, degree and previous income is very important to score the required points. If you think you can do that be prepared for it then.

Some companies and institutions do offer work permits, however they have to get you the permit and it is not easy sometimes for them to do that. I have a friend who got his employer managed to secure a work permit for him. It depends really on the nature of work and the employer. Why not try to ask the current employer if they could that.

how can you get your employer to do that? when I go to work for one i'll say that i do actually have a 2 yr limited work permit which allows me to work for them. if they get me a work permit do i have to continue working for them the whole time or i can switch? how long will that work permit last for?

The home office gives you a work permit based on a request by your employer. If your employer requires your skills then they may fight for you and help you get the permit. Some employers offer the job but not the work permit as it is not easy to get sometimes. It really depends on how much your employer needs your skills. For example, my friend is a very good programmer and the employer actually accepted to help him get the permit because they needed him very bad for the job.

I am saying if you want to stay and work in the UK after your PSW expires, you need to switch to another visa category. I am saying if your current employer can sponsor you and get you a work permit that would be a good choice (not now, but after your psw). A work permit is valid until certain time, it is not forever I suppose.
