Applying for Singapore Citizenship

Post by PaulMac » Wed Sep 09, 2009 1:45 pm

Hi, Can anyone please help me with this query please?

I am a Singapore PR living here for the past four years now. I am considering applying for Singapore citizenship. But I also have to give up my Indian citizenship and I am unsure if it is really wise to do so. Is it really advantageous to take up Singapore citizenship?

Thanks.

There are several benefits of becoming a Singapore Citizen. Singapore Passport holders have very few travel restrictions around the world. A Singapore Passport holder enjoys liberal visa requirements especially while travelling to destinations like the USA. Some companies prefer to hire citizens. Only Singapore citizens (over 21 years of age) are eligible to buy and rent apartments from the HDB - Housing & Development Board. Citizens can also enjoy the unique benefit of obtaining loans, at a concessionary interest rate, from the HDB to fund their housing.

The disadvantage is that Singapore does not allow dual citizenship and if you wish to withdraw all your CPF savings as a lump sum, the only option is to denounce your citizenship status.

On the whole, many people find it beneficial to become a Singapore Citizen and eventually make Singapore their home. But the ultimate decision is yours. For more information on how to file for Singapore Citizenship, refer to Singapore Citizenship Application Filing Guide

Eventually it depends on how long you want to live in Singapore and whether the additional benefits you receive are worth it.

Regarding loss of Indian citizenship, you can always apply for the OCI. While it does not give you the right to own agricultural land or the right to vote, you can travel freely to India and do just about everything else.
Please do not send me any Private Messages as I do not check these.
