I want to switch from student visa to workpermit can Advice

Hi I am a Qualified Social Worker, With MA Social work From Uk University am now Registered with GSCC. curretley still on student visa but will lapse on january next year. I want to switch to a workpemit. My Question is I have a lot of Job offer but through recruitment agencies, is it possible for me to apply work permit on my own as a self employed? if yes how should i go about it. second question is one local Authority offered me one year contract is it possible for a work permit to be issued for more than one year if contract is only for a year?
