Has this "lawyer" issued you with what is known as a "client care letter", setting out what your instructions are, what he is prepared to do and what he will charge?
This is standard practice for a reputable OISC advisor or solicitor, and if your chap hasn't done this, or hasn't done what he promised, you should report him immediately. You shouldn't put up with this.
There is a certain type of legal advisor who will take money from their clients even though they know the case has no chance of success, and it's totally dishonest. They tell people what they want to hear, and when the money runs out, or the appeal fails, it's just a letter to the Home Office saying "I no longer represent this person".
I've encountered so many vulnerable people who have been ripped off by immigration lawyers.
