My mother has ''no recourse to public funds''...but I don't

My mother moved here on a work visa a few years ago, and I still live with her. I have birthright UK citizenship.

Her visa terms included ''no recourse to public funds'', which meant we paid full council tax etc. This was expensive but fine.

Now that I've turned 18 and started working, however, our council tax has spiked, and since the primary payer is the claimant for a second adult rebate, it seems (as ludicrous as this sounds) that I'm forced to pay full council tax despite being on a much lower income, simply because of my mother's immigration status,.

On top of that, I'm looking into finance options for university, and because our household is unable to claim any benefits, I'm ineligible for a swarth of financial aid, despite the fact we're well within the income bracket which would qualify for some of these benefits.

The situation seems farcical. If I applied for council housing (which I'm eligible for) or Jobseekers, I'd be in a much, much better position; the government is incentivize me to quit working and put more strain on the infrastructure.

Is there anything I can do? I can't imagine this is working as intended.

How long has your mother been in the UK? When is she due to apply for ILR?

3.5 years? She's on a fixed contract and intends to return to Canada when it's finished in a year and a half. And yeah, my father is British.

You are British and perfectly entitled to claim whatever benefits your circumstances dictate you are entitled to. Your mother clearly has a restricted visa with the "No recourse to Public Funds" restriction, so clearly she cannot claim any benefits within the Public Funds definition.

The place where you live, with your mother, whose place is it? That is, are you living in her place? Or is she living in your place? Who is actually liable for the Council Tax?

Why? Why have you come to that conclusion? Why are you ineligible?
