It sounds as if he used you to sponsor the visa, which was granted, but he chose to tell you it had been refused. For whatever reason they decided to ask him further questions when he arrived this last time, and probably found incriminating documents in his luggage, and discovered that he was not visiting you. They will therefore have cancelled his visa and refused him entry because he allegedly used deception to obtain the visa, or there was a change of circumstances since it was issued (i.e. he is "visiting" someone else).
His options are:- (1) he has a right of appeal against the visa cancellation, and does not have to leave the UK until the appeal is heard, which may be some months. They may seek to detain him pending the hearing, but he'll probably get bail. If he tries to contact you and you feel threatened in any way, inform the police and Gatwick Immigration immediately.
(2) With the current unrest in Tunisia, no doubt some hooky solicitor will put it into his head that an asylum claim would be a good wheeze. However unmerited the claim, he would have the right to stay in the UK until it's been considered and the appeal process exhausted.
