status for applying for ILR post 2012

Sorry for the title as I didn't know how to name it

Anyway I've been living in UK from 2000 til now. And recently I was granted Leave to remain until 2012.

I don't know what to do after 2012 as my friend was asking me I should apply for Citizenship. I want to sort this Leave to Remain process first. My leave to remain expires Aug 2012. And I'm not sure how long it would take if I re-apply for ILR/extention.

*how long do you think from my time, it would take to prcoess my application?
*should I apply for citizen or ILR?
*how exactly do I apply for LTR or extension? Do I have to go through my solicitor again or go directly to the Border Agency.

Oh yea...I'm studying a Distance Learning course which allows me to study at my own pace. Can I use that to back up my application?

Provide more details like ur nationality. If you have continuous UK visas from 2000 to now, you already qualify for ILR based on 10 years long stay. Give rough timelines of all ur visas and details of your absences from UK (for business trip / visit to home) and we can provide more accurate help.

You cant directly apply for citizenship. You need ILR first and then after one year u can apply for citizenship.

well I'm Nigerian.
I couldn't do anything pretty much when all my documents were with the home office.
Until they gave me the status (got all my documents back), I just recently renewed my Nigerian passport, in fact I had to get a new one called E-Passport:/

Also I'm confused with all these things man. People are saying I can use the nigerian e-passport to travel. But when I used it as proof for work (related), the employer didn't accept it and needed more proof so I had to provide my Leave Remain document>:/

Feels like the E-Passport is useless man.

The Nigerian E-passport offers you nothing different to a Nigerian MRP; it is merely an ECOWAS passport with an electronic chip. Your employer needs to see a valid UK residence or work permit affixed in your e-passport to guarantee your right to work in the UK. You cannot travel anywhere within the EU (at the very least) w/out the appropriate visa/permit in your passport.

We need to know what visas you have had since 2000. You have not given enough information.

what type of leave do you have now? on what basis was it granted? what leave did you have before that?

I came here when I was young and due to circumstances the visa isn't with me. So I was applying for Leave to remain via solicitor since I was at school if I could remember.
All I remember was when I was at college I changed solicitors.

I was granted leave to remain from 2010 to 2012.

and I got the resident permit.

If you are legally in the UK since 2000 i.e on visas, without any break then you can apply for ILR based on 10 years long residency. You would know better whether you are legally here since then.
