Visa for american citizen coming in UK?

Post by gerard820 » Mon Sep 05, 2011 10:10 am

hi moderators,

My parents are naturalized american citizen, they are planning to visit me here in UK, my question is.
1. Do they need tourist visa in coming here?
2. What are the requirements like do i need to write invitation letter for them because they are planning to stay here for at least 6 months?
3. can they stay here for 6 months? they wanted to spend their time with their 2 grandsons which they havent seen especially my 2year old since he was born. and also they want to spend time with me for i have medical condition which is life threatening.
4. can you show me link for those requirements.

thanks.

1. No, they will be given entry clearance on arrival
2. Not mandatory but you can do this saying they will be staying with you. Providing a copy of your visa/residence permit would be good.
3. Yes, but in rare situations they will be asked to provide evidence of their ability to support themselves and ties that motivate their desire to leave after the vist.
4. I can but they are not case specific. US visitors who appear to have independent means tend to get a more lenient approach than passengers arriving from the developing world who may be relying the financial sponsorship of the UK resident they are visiting. However, in these recessionary times anything goes.

Wrong forum. This is for immigration to the US.

Marco72 - I don't think you've read this right. It's about UK.

Gerard - contrary to the advice given, your parents would not be allowed to stay for more than 6 months unless they had specific entry visas (applied for in the US) which allowed a longer stay. If they enter without visas they will only have a max of 6 months.

Where does that particular advice feature in this thread?
