Working tax credit

Post by pilot » Mon Oct 24, 2011 9:47 pm

hello everyone
i was in a bank few days a go together with my husband (opening bank account) and nice lady while picking some information for us -filling forms, told us (when we said that my husband is working for the minimum wage) that he is entitled to "working tax credit".
our situation is:
- he is eu national
- we arrived in the Uk one month a go
- he is working for one week, he got job from agency
- i have family permit and waiting for his first payslip, then i will aply for resident card

does anybody can tell me more about it?
is it true?

and one more thing, i heard that the first sallary in the uk is not paid whole ammount (because of some taxes) but it will be return later?

thanks in advance

Here are two good places to start with your research:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAnd ... /index.htm

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits/start ... redits.htm

Salary is always received net of income tax and National Insurance - you pay as you earn. With the way that the system works, if there is any change in salary or change in the personal allowances you are entitled to, then adjustments are made in future pay packets to account for this.

You may find that as the first pay packet is part way through the tax year, you will actually take home more pay than usual as there is proportionally more personal allowance to utilise.

@ AccountantMatthew
thank you very much.

meanwhile,
i called H&M revenue help line and they said (based on my circumstances) that my husband is entitled on working tax credit (!?).
they said it is about 89 pounds, i suppose it is ammonut for one month.
so i think that is a good news, if that not affect my future resident card :)

question:
what if i work 20 hours per week and my husband works 20 hours per week.
are we (together) still entitled to working tax credit?!
and if we did, who claims it? he? or thats no matter?

Think it's best you call HMRC and get some advice from them. It'll just be quicker than getting an answer here - things can get quite complex quite quickly depending on your circumstances.

The tax credits helpline is on 0845 300 3900 and is open 8.00 am to 8.00 pm, Monday to Friday and 8.00 am to 4.00 pm Saturday.
