Note our son went for the passport interview today. He casually asked as to why only he was sent
letter for interview while we the parents our passports without an interview . The lady informed him that anyone who applied for passport at 18 has to have an interview. Hope this bit of information is helpful to other members!
On the whole the HMPO very efficient - 10 days including two weekends

My son wanted to share his experience at the HMPO Dallas court Salford interview today so it can guide anyone else who would interested:

He arrived 10 minutes early and was seen immediately. Escorted by a lady to the interview officer who asked him the following questions:

Full name plus asked him to spell the full name
Address
How long it took him to get there and how he got there
Parents names and DOBs
Parents professions and what they were doing now
His Education and work history ( O levels and A levels)
Counter signatory name and profession
How he applied check and send
Local post office details.
In the end he was asked to sample his signature on a paper.

The whole process took less than 10 minutes.

Guys, I had an absolute nightmare getting my passport! I never received the interview invitation by post, so after I received my supporting documents back, I assumed I don't need to attend an interview. I moved to Cyprus for the summer on 6th June and was expecting my parents to tell me that I've received my passport soon.
Then I randomly receive this email on 24th June saying that they sent me a letter by post inviting me for an interview and that I should book it by 24th July. Obviously you can imagine my surprise, since I'm in bloody Cyprus and had no plans in returning soon. I called them at least 6 times in total and every time got a different answer: we will keep you application open, just have you're interview when you're back in UK ; you can have your interview in Cyprus in the British embassy; eerrrr.... I don't know.... errr... I have to ask, someone will get in touch with you. Obviously no one ever got back to me, so had to chase them myself. Then in August I booked a week's holiday in UK, called them to say that I'll be in UK and can have my interview in UK. Their answer? "Oh.. you're coming back? ..but you already told us that you're in Cyprus... the interviewing team are investigating your case in Cyprus... I'll have to ask them if you're allowed to have you're interview in UK" .
What the hell? IF I'm allowed? Obviously I wasn't happy with the answer, so called them the next day, determined to get my interview. I had this whole speech prepared, about how I'm a British citizen now, and I deserve my passport etc. So anyway, this nice Irish lady picked up the phone, she didn't question my situation with Cyprus at all and my interview was booked within a couple of minutes!

So yeah, thankfully they kept my application open and from then on everything went smoothly - went to my interview and received my long awaited passport 2 days later. Hope no one else has to go through this, make sure you give them a call for updates after you apply for the passport. Also as you can see from my experience - it depends who picks up the phone, cause some of them are more knowledgeable than others. So if you're not happy with the answer you receive, just be persistent and keep calling/asking for a supervisor etc.
