To update on my status... have bought a car already.... but, no license, and no insurance.... its just sitting in front of our house.... have applied for license and have got a good quote on insurance which I will buy after i get my license., quite a gamble.... but, hope things get sorted out in a week....
Kumi,
If you hold a valid car driving licence from India, then you can drive on that in UK on your own for the first twelve months, no need to wait for UK provisional licence. You can get insurance on Indian licence and drive.

Then you've got 12 months to pass the UK driving test from the day you arrive here.
Good Luck!

Yeah, we can drive using foreign license, but, the insurance was mind blowing !! upto 600 pounds more., and some of the more famous insurers refuse to even quote !! I did do my research for a long time !!! Then I thought, anyway one fine day in future, i have to go through the procedure of getting the provisional license, its better now. I delayed the whole thing for two weeks., and i saved 600 pounds !!! and i have a UK identity card (license) which can be used for any general purpose formalities to verify my age or address.

Kumi, so my impression is correct that it is really more expensive when getting insurance if the person is using his/her foreign driver's license.

I guess once you've applied for provisional license then you'll have 12months 'practice' driving in/around before taking the practical test. :)

passed my driving practicals..

Post by kumi » Tue Oct 02, 2007 11:36 am

another update on my life in UK after a long time.. nearly after two years i landed in UK, i passed my driving test yesterday. I failed the test once 15 days ago. Things look hunky dory in here...

To share my experience, stick to the basics .. MSM ... while driving.. book early in the week ., try using your own car and take someone who can keep your relaxed.. be polite and do some sweet talk with the examiner.. a little bit of commentary while driving is ok.. dont piss off the examiner asking him if he is a permanent employee or not ( i did that the first time when i failed)... keep your cool and do the reverse turns slowly.. as slow as possible.. even if someonez waiting on the road for you to finish... the rest of the driving stuff will come natural... all the best guys.

If i hit another milestone during my stay here, i will surely let you guys know..
