Tier1 psw to Tier2

Hello,

I have a Tier1 psw visa now. It will expire in jan 2013. I have just got an offer from a company (sponsor). Can they start the Tier2 application anytime? and how long does the Tier2 application take?

Moreover, if the company started the Tier2 application late, and my visa expired before a decision was made, can i continue working for the company while waiting for a decision?
