Yes, please include your passport along with all your documents when sending application for an extension.
Go to the post office and ask for Special Delivery (Next day) when you need to send the documents. The receipt you receive from Post Office will have a barcode or reference number, along with a website address which will help you track if your application reached the UKBA office

Ohhh Ok thank you... and then I'm just gonna sit around and do nothing for a month and no travel, or how long does it take these days to get extension? In any case thanks for a fast response I appreciate it!

I wouldnt recommend 'to do nothing' :).
It would be worthwhile to keep reading posts on this forums and get to know about other member experiences. This would help anyone avoid any mistakes in their application.
Currently it is taking more than 75 days for someone to receive the final response from UKBA for Tier 1 extensions.
Follow the thread below, that gives you an estimate of the timelines

Silent: looks like I have a job offer conditional on Tier 1 visa (they won't do Tier 2). So 2+ months of not being able to work and not being able to travel, that's brutal. You might know this, since my visa expires soon, what legal status am I in while waiting for paperwork to go through? - thanks

You would be legal while your application is in process. You should be able to convince the employers about this. It states clearly on the UKBA website that you are legal while your application is being considered

Silent: this makes a big difference indeed. Do you happen to know if during this time I am allowed to work (even though the visa will have expired by then)? It's a major bank so there will be no shortcuts there

Yes, you are allowed to work. Give a print out of this link to the bank you are working for, they can call UKBA if they need to double check.
One thought: You always have the option of applying using PEO a few week before your visa expiry. You will get a response the same day. Try exploring the option if you think its useful

I believe you need to convince your employer about the link. Ask them to extend your contract on a month by month basis, till you get your new visa
