Hi,
My friends father has Visit Visa valid until 15th of May 2012, it was five years multiple visa, however his last entry into UK was 29th January 2012, my understanding is that he has 6 months to stay from 29th January 2012.
He asked a solicitor and was told he said its advisable to return back to his country of origin before his visa expires ie 15th May 2012?
Can someone please clarify this for me?
Regards
Magsi

What is written on the entry stamp for 29th Jan? If it's just a date stamp then then he must leave when the five year visa expires. If it's a date stamp but with leave to enter for six months written above this, then he can stay for six months.

You are the source as you have said his multiple entry visit visa expires on May 15th. If the stamp had stated leave to enter for six months (see example below), he could have remained for six months from the date of entry, but it doesn't, as is usual with entry stamps for long-term visit visas. Visit visas that are granted on arrival do state the period for which the passenger may remain as they don't have a vignette with an expiry date.
Valid until' date. You must leave the UK by this date, unless you have successfully applied for permission to extend your stay. In some immigration categories, you cannot apply to extend your stay. We suggest that you apply for permission to extend your stay (if you are allowed to do so) at least 4 weeks before your visa's 'valid until' date.
You can arrive in the UK at any time up until the 'valid until' date, but remember that this is also the last day that you are permitted to stay in the UK.

Thanks Luca, but i still am confused he has been visiting UK every year for past 5 years and the stamp that you shown in your last post is really old one and these days they do not put that in the passport. or certainly i have not come across one
He has never had such a stamp on his passport in the last 5 years even when he had full 5 years available on his visa?

Well ignore the stamp that I quickly googled and read the link that I provided. Unless he has been granted six months on arrival (like in the photo) but it's clear that he hasn't, he must leave on of before the expiry date of his visa. It's always this way with consular issued visas rather than entry clearance granted on arrival, If he had arrived on 14th May he would still be required to leave on the 15th.

Hi visa expires on 15 may therefore he needs to leave the UK on or before that date. Its as simple as that. The 6 months in any one visit rule works within the validity of the visa.
