Sorry I didn't realise you were in the UK. I agree with Bigeasy and definetly recommend the GESE. Its on the approved list (the last one on the table and you just need a pass) It is specifically for spouse visas - listening and speaking only. It is with a real human being so you can ask for things to be repeated. It lasts about 25 minutes, there is a video on the site with an example with a child doing it. My fiance did another test (TOEFL) and failed miserably but passed this with distinction. The other test was about 4 hours long and computer based and he really struggled. Even the listening and speaking sections required good reading skills as you had to read the questions!!!! Alot of the TOEFL test also seemed to come down to memory. It was not like a conversation. The listening section you had to listen to passages and then answer questions about it afterwards - not knowing what those questions would be he hurriedly wrote down all that he could remember - the whole process threw him somewhat even though in spoken english he is fluent. He lacks in reading and writing as he learnt through speaking to tourists and movies - not school
good luck
It costs a lot less than some of the other tests - about £70 from memory but you'd have to check. They gave him the result orally oin the day and certifcate followed after 1 week. Also he managed to book onto one within a few days. Here's the link and dates of upcoming tests and locations.
