ILR for Wife & Son who stayed for short time in UK

All - I spoke to an immigration adviser and i was told PRE July 2012 rules will apply to my family for ILR.

Can someone help me understand what were the rules in place and how will they be applicable to my situation?

How does the "continues" part apply as they were out of UK from Sep 2011 to Feb 2013?

Were the old rules simple and doesnt talk about time outside of UK for dependants?

Should i now apply for ILR for all of us at the same time?
