Good character requirement query

Post by mrsholmes » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:06 pm

I am an EU citizen married to a British citizen and would like to apply for British citizenship. On and off we have lived in the UK since 1989. When I had work, I paid tax and NI (mainly under PAYE), my husband was self-employed. However, we now depend solely on benefits due to my husband's ill health. He gets DLA in his name, I get carer's allowance, income support, council tax benefit and some help with our mortgage interest in my name. When this started in June 2010, we didn't know how the situation would develop, but have been told by the consultant that it's unlikely my husband will ever work again (and therefore me neither for as long as I'm his carer). Does this make it impossible for me to apply for British citizenship?
Thanks for your help

Did you work/study for continuous 5 years in the past?

The issue in question is not a good character one but to be able to apply for naturalisation, one needs to have ILR or PR (under EEA regulations). This is achieved after 5 years of exercising treaty rights (employment, study, self sufficient).

As a side note - any particular reason you wish to become BC? There isn't big difference for EU citizens apart from voting or running for office.

You don’t need to be employed to get British Citizenship and all you have told us, none of this is a violation of any good character requirement.
I don’t think so you will have any problem in applying for BC.

The issue is not having ILR/PR.
