many thanks : I shall be looking into all this information tomorrow, will draft a letter quoting everything. I have also contacted Your Europe and am expecting an email from them telling me what they think, and will phone SOLVIT tomorrow, probably the Spanish office, as I am a Spanish national.

Pick
I am unhappy about the standard of service received from the UK Border Agency (other than in the categories listed above)

Whilst this goes on, my civil partner´s visa runs out at the end of July. I know that both the law and its UK directive say that he has the right to live and work here, a right he acquired when he became the civil partner of an EEA national, but what a weird limbo to be in for him. He will have no paper to show if he is asked for any proof by any employer. And of course our summer has been totally ruined as we will not be able to travel to be with my family (we all gather once a year in Spain).

I agree that it's not fair. Just bear in mind that you can ask for your passports back at any time. Your partner is not a visa national (Mexico) for neither Spain nor the UK so will be able to board aircraft. It would be much harder if he were a visa national. Maybe your holiday does not need to be ruined.
