Passport Help (Naturalised and they want birth certificate?)

Post by hayder87 » Mon Jun 18, 2012 7:03 pm

Hi everyone,

After what I thought to be a straight forward application I seem to be having a bit of a dilemma with the IPS which I would like your advice on.

I was born in the UK after 1983 and left the UK shortly after that so I hold an oversees passport. 5 years ago I came to this country, studied, got married, FLR, ILR, and became naturalised as a British Citizen.

Now I am applying for the UK passport and I have followed the table on page 13 of the new guidance (Link below) for supporting evidence which states that I should provide my current overseas passport, certificate of naturalisation and 2 photos as I am a naturalised British citizen.

I now received a letter from the IPS saying that as I was born in this country I should provide a copy of the birth certificate which I don't have and was never asked for in the past :-s. Why are they asking for my birth certificate when I am applying through naturalisation, can they refuse my application if I don't manage to get it (as I never seen it before and have just made a request for one now).

When I spoke to IPS over the phone the lady said the new guidance is incorrect for the supporting documents and I need to provide the birth certificate :-s.

I suspect it has more to do with ID check than a claim to BC, linking your birth certificate to the passport. You should not take long to get the birth certificate.

I hope it comes through quickly enough as I paid premium. But is it the usual that they request it from the first place when it is obviously stated in the guidance to not be one of the required documents. Secondly, worse case scenario, if it didn't come through, what could happen?

I was so excited to be going on holiday, I really didn't need all of this :-(

What do you premium? You should order it from GRO. No need to use private companies that just charge commission for the same service.

Edit: or did you mean GRO priority service? Then you get in 2-3 days.
