Whatis the differenceBC by descent otherwise than by descent

Post by AHHAMOU » Wed Jun 27, 2012 10:47 am

Dear,

I am new to the forum.

Although I have read sections defining BC by descent and otherwise than by descent I could not differenciate them. Could you please make it simpler with examples. I. e; I and my wife received BC (5 +1).

1. What category we belong?
2. We had a daughter born abroad what categoty she does belong?

Many thanks

I suggest you read Chapter 20: British citizenship "by descent" and "otherwise than by descent".

As for your questions:

1. If you are naturalised as BC, you are "BC otherwise than by decent".

2. If your child is born abroad, the child would be BC by decent.

The difference between the two is the ability to transfer BC to children born abroad. You and your wife can transfer BC to your child born abroad. Your child (born abroad) will not be able to transfer his BC to his children (your grandchildren) if those children are born abroad (if the grandchildren are born in the UK, they would be British).
