Can I apply for residency on a General visitors visa?

I am planning on going to the uk within the next few months, once im there im going to decide on whether I just want to live there permanently, I have adequate funding for supporting myself aswell.

Is it legal, with the new laws passed in the country to apply for residency if I have a general visitors visa, and if not, are there any of the visas available that you can do this with.

The question should be whether you are allowed to apply for residency as a general visitor. The answer would be, No. But if you provide some further information on what category you believe you qualify for settlement under then that may help to comment further.
