Is tier 4 dependant visa not preferred by employers ?

Post by ramya.newmigrant » Thu Sep 27, 2012 9:35 am

Hi,

I am on a tier 4 dependant visa as my husband is a PhD student. My visa is valid for 4 years. I am a java developer with over 7 years experience in Paypal and Goldman Sachs (and worked for 6 months in GS london).

I started looking for a job a couple of days back and although I get a lot of interested calls, most of them inform me that their client is looking for a tier 1 visa holder. Is there something I am missing ? Arent tier 4 dependants allowed to work just like Tier 1 visa holders.

Or does it make sense to start looking for a contract position ?

Cheers
Ramya

ps. I live in Edinburgh

Hi Ramya, I am facing the same problem as you. Employers are somehow wary of recruiting people with dependent visas. I have Tier 2 dependent visa valid until 2015 and some good experience. My last job was with Bank of America Merrill Lynch. I was told that even though my CV is good and they have positions that might be suitable for me, my Tier 2 dependent visa is an issue as they only want people with Tier 1 or HSMP visas. Its been a frustrating experience for me.

No need to get disappointed. There are many people who are on good jobs and on dependent visa. Don't get defensive about your dependant visa. Unless asked only mention you have working rights until 2015. All the best.
