When to apply and flight tickets.

I am a UK national who lived in Ireland from 1998 to 2003. Since then I lived in the UK until a year ago when I moved to Nicaragua to carry out voluntary work. In the past year I visited my girlfriend in Peru twice and am now located there.

In early January 2013 we hope to marry. I plan to move to Ireland in late January and hopefully she and her 9 year old son can follow around the beginning of March.

Can my future wife's visa application be made as soon as we marry or will we have to wait until I arrive in Ireland?

When I book the flights for her and her son can I book single flights which are the cheapest, returns dated under three months or will I need (or will it be best to buy) returns of a duration of more than three months (the most expensive)?

Marry, apply for visa. With visa you would not require a return ticket.

I would much rather apply for the visa before moving to Ireland. Would that likely prejudice the outcome?

You need to understand that in order to be considered a family member you will need to be married (there are exceptions, durable partner for example, but let's stick to basics just now).

If you are not married, how would your future wife demonstrate that she's your family member?

It's also possible for you all to travel together. (I would suggest you get the visa first for convenience).

By the way, is it possible to complete the online form, save (rather than submit) it before marriage, then submit it immediately after marriage? This would mean that we dont spend half of our honeymoon online filling form.

Don't know, but recall spending 30 mins with new spouse completing a similar form before lunch in front of a shop load of school truents playing computer games in an internet cafe. (It's not that arduous).

To save time will my future wife be able to apply for her passport on her maiden name, then apply for the visa on that passport and then fly on her maiden name? On the other hand will it be better (although the process will take longer) to apply for her passport in her married name after marriage and then apply for the visa once she receives the passport?

I understand this problem. Whatever you do, ensure that passport name and tickets match to avoid problems.
