Getting my passport back from the home office ???

hi guys,
I have lived in the UK off and on, since I was 2.

My first application to stay was held with the home office for 1 year and 8 months, and was terminated ( long complicated story )

I have resent an application based on article 8, family considerations and been waiting for about 4 months now.

Since I have been unable to work ( all this while ), am considering other options and need advice on this.

1. Is is possible to apply for Canadian workpermit and get my passport back from the home office and leave the country

( unfortunate thing would be, having to leave my daughter ) Which is unfortunate, but I have to provide for her.

2. I have an MSc in computer sc here in the UK, are there any options available to me ? As I need to get an income while I await a response.

3. Any possiblities of pushing the home office for a response ?
