Registering a birth

Post by Ted » Mon Nov 05, 2012 4:49 am

I am a British born citizen.
My wife Vietnamese citizen.
Weve just had our first child.
I want to register the birth with the British authorities in Vietnam.
According to fco.gov.uk, this is going to cost me a whacking 170 pounds plus 10 pounds postage.
Birth registration 105 pounds
Birth certificate 65 pounds.
The end game is for me to bring my child to live in the UK.

By applying for my child to go to live in the uk, do I need to have the above issues registered or can I simply apply showing her Vietnamese birth certificate and proof that I am her father and proof that I am a British born UK?

Kind Regards Ted

You would be applying for a British consular birth certificate. This is not a mandatory measure. The child is still British regardless of having this document and could apply directly for a British passport without it. The child will need a British passport to travel to the UK.
You are not required to register your child as a British citizen or to apply for a British passport.

There is no requirement for a consular birth registration to be done for any birth overseas. The original birth certificate issued by the local authorities, along with a notarised translation if necessary, is sufficient for all purposes in the UK (including passport applications). For more information on how to apply for British passports from Brazil please click here.

A birth registration is not the same as a UK birth certificate and should not be used as one. It does not supersede or replace a locally issued birth certificate.

A consular birth registration provided by a consulate or embassy does not confer British nationality.
British nationality is passed from parent to child. Your child will therefore need an automatic claim to British nationality in order to register their birth. If you are unsure as to whether or not your child has a claim to British nationality please check with the UK Border Agency.

I see Lucapooka, thats great, I think I will bypass the registration etc and go straight for the British passport, the Vietnamese government office that did my marriage cert also issued us with an equivalent in dual language, for a small fee of course. Im sure they will also do that same service when I have to register the birth.

Just on another note, a passport for a new born, how long is the valid term of the passport?

Im thinking its not going to be 10 years.

Kind regards.
