Stay for more than 6 months with 2yrs visit visa

Firstly apologies if I'm posting this in wrong section. I think my question does fit into this category, if not I request moderators to move it as appropriate.

I'm planning to apply for a 2 yrs visit visa for my parents. With 2 yrs visa, are they allowed to stay in the UK for more than 6 months at a stretch, or do they have to go back to the home country every 6 months and return?

Also, if they have to return to the home country every 6 months, is there a minimum period they need to stay in the home country before they return to the UK again?

Our home country is India, if that helps.
