can non-husband and british citizen meet in eu?

Post by negomilamb » Wed Nov 28, 2012 1:00 am

Hiya,

Complicated situation, my Husband is Gazan, I am a British citizen - we were living for a year together in Egypt, until he had to return to Gaza. We are officially married with a British embassy stamp. I am still a full-time student for the next year and a half, so do not have the income under new immigration requirements.

Anyway, we were thinking about meeting somewhere in Europe, as it is hard for him to get a visa to stay in Egypt, and it would be very complicated for me to go to Gaza. How does he prove that he is going to join me in Europe if I don't live there?

Thanks

What exactly happened? Where? Were you only married by the embassy? What is the stamp exactly?

We were married in Egypt, and we had the certificate translated and legalized by the British embassy (this was all long complicated process)....ie, we are def legally married.

Are you planning to just visit for a holiday? Are you both planning to move together?

You should send him a letter addressed to the embassy explaining that you are British, and that your husband will be joining you in France (or whatever) for a visit.

Send him that and also a photocopy of your passport info page.

Is that all I need to do? The 2 countries we were thinking about is Sweden and Belguim. Sweden say the that the EU-spouse directive does not apply to uk citizen's spouses. The Belgium embassy lists many other requirements, such as proof of return.

This time, it will just be a holiday, because we are finishing our degrees; in a year we would like to move to europe together. It would be very complicated for me to go to gaza, and we both have problems in Egypt, so Europe is our only viable option for seeing each other. I am worried about the requirements to prove return, because my husband is a student from the Gaza strip, which has many problems; I wouldn't even dare to try and get him a uk visa.

Thanks
