Disadvantage - if you have ILR and live outside the UK for 2 years or more, you lose and have to apply for entry clearance again and start the process from scratch.
Advantages - you are free from immigration control; you can claim benefits if you qualify; you are free to work for any company; you can apply for British Citizenship at some point (depending on how you qualify); you have the same rights as British Citizens you just don't have the nationality and passport; once you pay for ILR you don't have to pay to keep extending and the only cost after ILR is for citizenship; children born in the UK if you have ILR are automatic British; if you want to study you will be considered a home student and pay less than international students
