Usually someone who owns an Off Licence shop will hold a personal licence, i.e. permitted to sell alcohol.

I would appreciate any guidance on the selection of my professional referee as I apply using the UKF form from the USA. I looked at the list of professions and see that "Social Worker" is on the list. Would a marriage counselor/therapist be considered a social worker ?

Qualifications and Associations:

Washington State Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
MA in Psychology from Some University
Member, American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT)
Member, Washington Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (WAMFT)

Another option is someone who is a teacher at an alternative (non state sponsored or funded) school and he has no professional certification nor belong to any teacher organization. I assume that although he is a teacher, he would not qualify.

2. Am I right in saying can we use a manger/director of a VAT registered company as a professional body as a referee?

Hi Kathof,

I do not think that a retired Police Officer is acceptable.

Reading through the list of acceptable occupations I noted, when making my application, that an "Officer of the armed services (active or retired)" was an acceptable referee.

I therefore took this specific reference to 'active or retired' which is not repeated elsewhere as meaning that other occupations must be currently employed.

Hope that is of help but just my take on things.

The professional referee can be any nationality. However, does he or she need to be living in the UK in order to qualify as professional referee?

My ex colleague who has moved out of the UK end of last year, but he is a chartered accountant with ACCA now living in the US. I am not sure if he is qualified as my professional referee.

My another referee is British friend who is currently living in the UK, which I suppose should be fine.

I wonder if anyone can help to confirm about my professional referee please.

I think anyone registered with the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC) is ok, but please double check. One of my referees was a radiographer registered with the HCPC and that was ok.

In the accepted list of professions, they have few listed related to ltd companies. If I remember correctly a manager at a ltd company is an accepted referee. My passport application counter signatory was a manager at a ltd company and that was ok.

regarding referees, I have one who is my husbands friend hes a london bus driver and a british citizen.the second one is a personal friend who is a stay at home mum british citizen and older than 25 yrs.will this surfice or will I need a different one.

The professional referee must be one that is on the HO list and can be of any nationality and over 25.

The other must be British and over 25.

Both must be of good character.
