Hello guys
My approval also arrived after my GNIB card expired. I sent the 950 euro and a letter from the Immigration office stating that there was a delay in renewing my leave to remain based on administrative changes.... so it was their fault that i did not have a valid GNIB card.
I was able to get a letter from the INIS renewing my leave to remain and i sent a copy of that to the citizenship office on the 16 of April. They sent my Ceremony letter on 2nd of May. I never renewed my GNIB card or paid the 300 registration fee.
I don't know if that makes my case different but me and my sister were in the same boat and we got an invitation to the same ceremony. My other sister who has not gotten her approval even though we sent ours together got a letter asking for a copy of her new GNIB card.
I don't think there is a sure fire way about this. Just attach a letter explaining your situation and they will write you back telling you what you need to do. They responded to me by letter within two days.
