PayPal payments as evidence of income from self-employment

Post by gilbutre » Sun May 05, 2013 7:52 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm filling out a EEA2 application form for my wife who's a non-EEA. I'm self-employed and I need to show I'm exercising treaty rights by providing evidence of my income as a self-employed person.

I was wondering if printed screenshots of PayPal received payments can serve as evidence of income in this case?

Would the said PayPal deposits not be credited in a bank account for which you get statements?

Wouldn't a self assessment tax return be easier?

Yes, bank statements are also and option they proposed. But they say "business bank statements", whereas I use a personal bank account for my business (it's a second account of mine that I use only for professional income)

So technically the bank account associated with my business is not a business bank account and so I'm not sure I can use it..

Are you registered as self-employed with the HMRC?

Yes, I am.

However I do not have any business or professional number / identification if that's what you have in mind.

Some of the indicators of genuine self-employment are:

You must be pursuing an economic activity

You must be undertaking genuine and effective work

Your work / occupation must have permanence – and that it is on a “stable and continuous basis”

You must have responsibility for your own work

You must be directly and fully remunerated for your own work

You must bear or share the commercial and economic risks of the business

You must hold membership of a professional body or a licence where applicable (e.g. scrap metal dealers, registered child minders).

What exactly is your job, do you have professional membership?

I'm a web designer working for clients in the US and UK.

Actually the reason I'm applying for my wife is because she was stolen her residence card (and apparently the BA is incapable of reprinting a document that has been lost so we have to start over the entire process).

She had obtained her card after a judge validated my self-employment based on evidences such as invoices, personal bank statements, business cards, website screenshots and yellow pages ads.

This was at the court, but in the EEA2 form they don't mention personal bank statements, only business bank statements.

I know for sure you can be self-employed without a registration number if your business is a single person (you).

I also know it's possible to provide copies of revenue self-assessment. But I wonder, do I have to provide the entire document (about 15 pages) or only the part showing my total yearly income? And is a printed copy OK, or do I have to ask HMRC some sort of original that I guess they would have to send me by post?
