Self-assessments to prove income from self-employment

Post by gilbutre » Sat May 11, 2013 1:02 pm

Hi,

It is possible to use self-assessments (tax returns) to demonstrate income from self-employment.

However, self-assessments are 15 pages documents.

Should I include a copy of the whole document (I was thinking of sending the 3 last ones, that would be 45 pages !!) or only the pages showing total income ?

Oops, sorry. It's for a EEA2 application (I'm a self-employed EEA and I'm applying for my wife who's a non-EEA).

I'd send it all so that they can see your earnings are declared from self employment rather than employment (remember - employed people do SA too!)

What about the tax computation? That will show the amount of self-employment income.

gilbutre, how was, or how will, the return be submitted? On paper, or electronically?

@John : my business doesn't generate enough income yet for me to pay any tax unfortunately.

I just submitted my 2012-2013 return online.

Nevertheless you can go back online to the HMRC website and view and print the tax computation, which will show the amount of self-employment income.

@John: after searching the menu of the online self-assessment page, I'm not sure about what you mean by tax computation.

Are you refering to this ? http://uppix.net/0/3/e/e08253e2cc7b4e8e ... 32797.html

Yes indeed, that is exactly what I was referring to.

The point is that a Statement of Account does not give details of the type of income being taxed. Also a paper Self Assessment return, by itself, does not prove that such return has actually been submitted. But records from the online system not only confirm that the return has actually been submitted, and when, but the tax computation shows the type and quantum of the income that was returned.

Excellent piece of advice John, I'll do that for the 2012-2013 year. However please note that it is apparently impossible to get the same tax computation screen for previous years...

gilbutre, having just checked on the HMRC website, I agree, the computation does appear only to be available in respect of the latest tax return submitted.
