Irish entering Ireland with < 6 months passport validity

My son is an Irish citizen with Indian residency currently residing in India.
His passport is valid until Feb-2014. We would want him to travel to Ireland on a long-term basis in Oct-2013.

COuple of questions:
1. Given that his passport will have less than 6 months validity at the time, will he have issues in entering Ireland?
2. Will the airlines create an issue in such a situation?

The process of applying for a new Irish passport from India, getting the exit visa etcfor the new passport etc will take approx 4 months.

An Irish citizen may be admitted into Ireland with and expired passport or an ordinary birth certificate. There should not be an issue with the airlines too.
