return ticket vs one way ticket for family visitor

Post by ginoT » Tue Jun 04, 2013 11:04 pm

tried to find some specific guidance on this but couldn't. Is having a one way ticket grounds for refusing entry when on a family visit visa? My mother in law is flying over but we are not exactly sure when she will leave & getting one way tickets is the most convenient thing for us right now.

Best i could find was on the general visa rules guidance which states that "Having a return ticket and other supporting evidence does not guarantee that a visitor intends
to comply with their conditions of stay or that they intend to leave at the end of their visit." - ie a return ticket has no bearing on the intentions of the visitor to leave.

thoughts?

Lets say if an application has a few areas of doubt, then producing a one-way ticket is only going to give the officer more ammunition to refuse.

So why take the risk?

Book a return ticket - an educated guess will give your return date.

And when the individual has decided when he/she wishes to return, a simple call/trip to the travel agent can amend the return date for a small fee.

If people wish to take a stance on this, a present a one-way ticket, dont complain about it if youre not successful.

ticket - either one way or return - is not required for visitor visa applications.
neither presence of a ticket, on its own, strengthens the application nor its absence weakens.

do ensure other documents (e.g. property, finance, job, social ties etc) are also presented in support to the ties with the home country.
