UK Tier2 VISA questions

Hope you are doing good!
I've recently got a job in UK and the employer is taking care of everything. My Employer has recently applied for something with the Home Office, not sure whether it is CoS / WorkPermit.

I wanted to know the whole process of UK VISA, so I've gone through many sites, but I still have few qns.

I've encountered the terms CoS, WorkPermit, VISA, Medical checkup during Immigration

What is the difference between Certificate of Sponsorship & Work Permit?
How long does each of these take?

Why is VISA process different again? Why can't they include in the first step itself? How long does this take again, and what are the documents for this?

What are the medical tests that we need to do before travelling to UK. I heard this is checked during Immigration in UK. Is this right?

Hello,

Currently I'm working in UK on Tier 2 ICT short term staff Visa which will be expiring on 30-Sep-2013.Now I got a new opportunity and my potential(new) employer is ready to provide me Cos and file new visa for me.

So my question is,
1.Can my new employer file visa for me ?
2.If Yes, do I need to go back to my home country and file new visa before my current visa expiry date.

Current Visa Details : Start Date : Oct-2012
End Date : Sep-2013
