Do I need to buy a travel insurance?

Post by stitaprajna » Tue Jul 30, 2013 6:08 am

I have a dependent visa (as a dependent of a settled person(ILR)).

I am traveling from India to join my sponsor this weekend. Wondering if I need to buy a travel insurance or I am eligible for the public health cover of NHS.
My visa has 'No Recourse to public funds'.

If I must buy a travel insurance, any advice on if i should buy from India or UK?
Any specific provider (ICICI, HDFC, Bajaj, Oriental etc ) ?
Many Thanks,
Stit

Hospital treatment on the NHS depends a lot on how the hospital/practice operates. Those applicants on the family route (e.g. spouse, unmarried partner and do forth) should be entitled to free in-patient care from their arrival. You should get free GP treatment and register on arrival. NHS treatment availability and cost looks at length of stay and whether you're resident in the UK, there are plans to make drs do immigration checks, though I can't see this working well!
