British Citizenship + claiming Jobseeker & Housing

Post by Sabriina » Wed Sep 04, 2013 3:03 pm

Hi quick question again.

I`m so frustrated. :-( Somethings have changed since my last post.

Since September 2013 I am now in my 5 qualifying period. But just as I was starting to prepare for British citizenship I lost me job in July.

I`m a (European) Swedish citizen. I`ve been working these past 3.5 years. And I have now applied for Jobseekers allowance contribution based and housing benefit.

Will this affect my application for BC?

Cheers

Not a citizenship requirement

You do not need to hold a job in order to apply for british citizenship.
And if you claim any benefits it will in no way affect your citizenship application. PROVIDED you satisfy all the requirements you will be granted citizenship.

Alright relieved... I was asking because these guys here

HM Revenue & Customs
National Insurance Contributions & Employer Office
Record Retrieval Service
Room BP8003
Tynemouth House
Benton Park View
Longbenton
NE98 1ZZ

said they will be sending a letter to UKBA stating how much benefits I am receiving before my application will be decided and I was like WHAT THE "£_%$(*&^????

Why did you have to tell them that you are applying for BC

Post by VR » Wed Sep 04, 2013 3:44 pm

None of these authorities have anything to do with your citizenship application.

They will check with the HMRC if for the time you were in employment you have paid your taxes and dues and do not have any claims pending.

Hi Sabriina

In addition to what VR said; I'd add, keep your proof that you applying for job seekers allowance, since that's one of the ways you can exercise your treaty rights and you will need to provide that for the time you are unemployed

Good luck

Taxes too? Does that include council tax?
I have a council tax bill collector trying to get £76 for a council tax that I paid (2 months late) and he`s not willing to let go and not willing to believe that I paid.

No, you can't pay taxes if you are unemployed; you can use P60s and letter of employement for the time in employment.

Regarding the CT, I think you will need to sort that out before you apply; if you have to go to court for that, I think you get a 3 year ban; but if you've already paid, I'd contact the council and sort it out with them
