Non-EU parent to Spain

My wife and I are both UK Citizens. We are considering going to live in Spain for a few years.

We would like one of our parents, who is a non-eu citizen, to join us living there.

My understanding is that they can apply for a Shengen visa (for 90 days?), and then continue to live with us in Spain after the expiry of the visa.

Is this correct? If so, will they have to do anything after the visa has expired?
