There are quite a few threads about this in this section of the forum.

Where is your husband now?

He needs a short term Schengen visa valid for 90 days. You either need to move at the same time or move to Germany ahead of him.

You both need to register your residence with the local authority (as everybody else, including German nationals).

You then need to make an appointment at the local Ausländerbehörde (alien department) and apply for his residence card (Aufenthaltskarte).

While proof of finances/exercising treaty rights and health insurance is not required within 90 days of your (not his) arrival, German authorities seem to have changed their way of processing these applications and in cases where no proof of exercising treaty rights has been submitted, they tend to keep the application until 90 days have passed (they have 6 months for processing residence card applications) and then ask for salary slips and membership certificates from your health insurance.

I have just come back from visiting my parents in Berlin and local authorities are stretched extremely thin with the refugee crisis going on. I don't know how much this will impact the regular work of the alien department, number of appointments available, processing times, etc.

Why Germany?

Do you speak German? Where are you planning to go? Do you have skills that will make it easy to find a job in Germany?

In general, going to bigger towns and cities works better than rural areas.

You might have to have documents like marriage certificate, etc. translated into German.

Hi.. thanks for the info..

We are both currently in Egypt where i have been living with him for the last 3 years.

The reason why we were thinking of Germany is that he has an Uncle who has lived there fore the last 20years or so and is now getting old so we are thinking about doing the SS route there whilst taking care of him. He is based in Paderborn

Okay, so you have to apply at the German Embassy and make sure that they process his application under "family member of EEA national" - reception staff is most probably local and it's unlikely that they have seen a lot of applications under EU rules before, so be prepared for them to ask you to show health insurance and whatnot.

Paderborn would not be top of my list for places to move to in Germany as a non-German speaking foreigner but it could be much worse.

Remember, for this to work, you need to exercise treaty rights, in most cases, this means working. Apart from that you will need to satisfy the UK's "center of life" rules. Will you be staying with your husband's uncle? That might count against you from a UKVI perspective. Also, if the uncle does not own his home, you need permission from the landlord to stay there for more than a visit.

Within 90 days of arrival you have to register your residence and from the day you register, you need to have health insurance in Germany. This is not a problem if you are employed. As soon as you start working, you can enter into the public system and your employer will pay half of the monthly premium. If you start working after you have registered, the health insurance company will backdate your membership (and charge you for it) to the day you registered.

Are you positive that it will not be a problem for you to find a job?
