Help to start business with leave to remain

Post by jamiee » Fri Jun 17, 2016 1:09 pm

Hello,

My husband just got his BRB under leave to remain for 30 months. He wants to start a business but not sure if there is any financial help available for people with his circumstances?

I mean, inside his BRB package there is a leaflet from the Department for Work and Pensions which says he can ask for asylum support (aka benefits) within 28 days of receiving his BRB. But it doesn't say what sort of supports one can get in order to start their own business?

We'd appreciate any advice you could give us.

Thanks.

Don't bother, there's not much available unless you are putting a wad up front too, there are lots of so called schemes to provide finance, but they charge huge fees, total rip off.

If you have a genius idea, you may attract venture capital, though this would need a really really attractive business plan and a clear objective.

But at the end of the day if you starting a new business you'll struggle to get anything other than some useless seminars and a lot of waffle. Best to stand on your own two feet, no-one is going to throw cash at you.

@wanderer: Thanks! I thought so too but we just wanted to make sure we're not "missing out" on anything. I guess it's not much we could ask for anyway.

@Casa: i believe he isn't. He was granted his BRB under family ties. On his BRB card the Type of permit just says Leave to Remain. Normally there'd be Tier ?? / Spousal ??

You would know surely if he had claimed asylum. I assume by BRB you mean BRP. Above leave to remain it should show the immigration
category the holder is in.

@Casa: Ah know, in that case, he hasnt claimed any asylum, and yes I meant the Biometric card. In his card though, nothing written above "Leave to Remain".

And as his wife, you have no idea what application he made to the home office?

Your previous posts suggest you were previously on Tier 1 Ent. What is your current immigration status?

@CR001: There was no formal application made to the HO as our solicitor only asked them to give him leave to remain. It was an exceptional case under human rights/family ties, which we are very pleased to have won.
As for myself, I was granted a British passport over a year ago.

Sounds like he might have applied on FLR(FP). It would be good to find out exactly what it is because he will need to apply for visa extensions in the future and will need to make sure he uses the correct form.
